| Newsletters, Investment | | | Tip sheets are to the sharemarket, what the Best Bets and the Turf Digest are to horse racing. The frightening thing about tip sheets is that anyone, no matter what their background, could start up business as a tipster. In New Zealand there are no requirements for tip sheets to be registered with a regulatory authority, such as the Securities Commission. No doubt this will change at some stage in the future when the powers that be eventually wake up to the abuses that do occur from time to time.
The quality of tip-sheets available ranges from the very good to the very dreadful. Their merit pretty much reflects the calibre of the personalities (or lack of them) behind the publication. We are aware of one such publication that publicly prides itself on its research capabilities yet has shown itself to be incapable of undertaking even the most elementary of company searches. This is what one should look for in a good tip sheet:
- Full disclosure of the identities behind the publication. Street address, the name of the tipster behind the tip sheet, their credentials, experience and qualifications; contact phone numbers, and so on. University degrees alone do not make a good financial adviser.
- Immediacy. A tip sheet should tell you to buy or sell before the event, not after it. With hindsight anyone can claim to be a sharemarket guru. It’s no use knowing about a good buy if you are the last to know about it.
- The advice you are given should be flexible — not always bullish nor always bearish. They will be right some of the time (even a stopped watch is right twice a day!) but not most of the time. A tip sheet should assist you in making good decisions, in today’s market conditions.
- Is a history of recommendations maintained and if so is it accurate and true?
- Is the style of the tip sheet suitable to your own investing style?
